Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 End-of-Life Overview

On January 14th, 2020, Microsoft discontinued technical assistance for the Windows 7 operating system, including automatic updates that help protect the computer. Computers running Microsoft Windows 7 after January 14th, 2020 will be at an increased risk of compromise and infection from malware. A similar process was completed for Windows 8 and 8.1 on January 10th, 2023. More information can be found at Microsoft's end-support page.

What does this mean for ResNet users?

In order to remain compliant with the UC San Diego Minimum Network Connection Standards, systems running Windows 7 must either be removed from the network, upgraded to a supported operating system (Windows 10 or 11), or replaced if the hardware is too old to run a supported OS. ResNet will no longer support the use of Windows 7 on the network.

  • Windows 7 computers will be blocked from using the ResNet network.
  • Windows 7 computers will not receive software or network troubleshooting support.

Why shouldn't I keep using Windows 7 or 8.1?

  • Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 no longer receive updates from Microsoft, so it is only a matter of time until the device becomes compromised. All operating system vulnerabilities and viruses for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 discovered after the end of support will not be patched, leaving your computer and personal data at risk.
  • Other software manufacturers will shortly stop developing Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 compatible applications.

What support is offered for ResNet users running Windows 7, 8, or 8.1?

  • ResNet can assist you in the installation of a newer version of Windows.

Please note that this support does not include university owned machines. If you have a university owned machine and need assistance upgrading to a newer operating system, please contact your department tech group.

My computer doesn't meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 10, what are my options?

If your computer too old or doesn't meet the requirements to install Windows 10, you will not be able to use that device on the ResNet network. One option would be to install Ubuntu or another Linux-based operating system. Another option would be to upgrade either the components in the machine that can be replaced, or to purchase a new computer that is compatible with Windows 10. The UC San Diego Bookstore sells new computers at a discounted rate from the manufacturers.
